The Courthouse was originally built in 1878 and features a mixture of Victorian and Gothic styles. Chicago architect J. C. Cochran designed the building in 1878. The building remains the center of civic pride for Lake County. The current Lake County Courthouse is two miles away. The Grand Old Lady was almost torn down when new owners threatened to build a parking lot. But the Lake County Historical Society stepped in and rescued the building from demolition. Today, the second-floor courtroom is used for weddings, formal events, and neighborhood theater productions.
The museum houses artifacts from the John Dillinger robbery in the 1930s. Visitors can see exhibits commemorating the robbery and view a submachine gun, which was used by the robber. The CCC workers also built the park in the 1930s and the courthouse, recognizing the importance of this site. The museum contains interpretive signage and a memorial trail. Visitors can explore the museum’s history by exploring the small museum located inside a unique stone structure, which was formerly a water tower. And the CCC workers also created the city’s landmark Charles and Spruce statues.
The courthouse is located on the downtown side of the city center. It is home to the Columbus Veterans Memorial, which honors the memory of local veterans. The memorial is composed of four granite stones with names superimposed on them. Family members and friends of deceased servicemen and veterans created the memorial.
