The Pennsy Greenway Trail lies across the street from Rohrman Park. This is an excellent, brand new paved trail coming from Rohrman Park to Millenium Park, from Calumet City, Illinois to Schererville Indiana. The Schererville segment of the Pennsy Greenway Trail stretches from Wilhelm Street near the Police Department, past Redar park, under US 30, and finishes up at Rohrman Park. This stretch of the Pennsy Greenway Trail is approximately 2.1 miles in length. Parking is available on Reiplinger Road near the Police Station as well as the Schererville Skate Park, at Redar Park, and at Rohrman Park. Wheelchair accessible parking is available in the paved parking area off of Rohrman Road at the southeast end of the trail or in the paved parking lot off of North Centennial Drive at the northwest end of the trail.
The trail runs on the former Penn Central Railway, and while currently incomplete, construction began on Phase 3 of the local Pennsy Greenway Trail in 2019 and continues with a pedestrian crossing over the CN railroad tracks, then proceeds under the US 41 bridge, and connects to the existing trail at Wilhelm Street. The final phase of the Pennsy Greenway Northwest Trail through Schererville recently received funding. This 2.26-mile extension of the route will start from Rohrman Park going southeast to the town limit at Clark Road south of 93rd Street. This section will attach the local trail to the larger, regional Pennsy trail system, which when completed will extend from downtown Lansing, IL to Crown Point, IN.
The trail surface is paved asphalt and smooth. The whole route is estimated to be in the mostly gentle (5% or less) grade category. This is a popular path for biking, running, jogging and walking. It is stroller and wheelchair accessible. The best times to visit this trail are March through October. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. Those who are walking dogs will also find waste disposal stations along the path.
