Here are 5 reasons why the Giant Madagascar Hissing Cockroach is an easy to care for pet.

  • Depending on how many of these little darlings you choose to have they can be kept in a small aquarium. If you have several, you may want to use a 10 – 15 gallon tank. Use wood shavings in the bottom and be sure to give your roach some hiding places. These can be the roll from toilet paper, a piece of wood or a small cardboard box.
  • The Hissing Cockroach is a tropical species. You will want to keep the inside of their home moist and between 75 – 90 degrees. This will create a warm, humid environment.
  • Feeding a Hissing Cockroach is easy. They will eat dry dog food, which provides needed protein. You can also feed them fruits and vegetables. It is said that they love carrots. Just be sure to remove any uneaten food before it has a chance to spoil.
  • Water can be kept in a shallow dish with some cotton or a sponge. The little Hissers will suck the water from the wet material. Don’t keep a deep dish of water, we don’t our exotic pet to drown!
  • The Hissing Cockroach is harmless and docile. They do not bite or sting. They don’t care to run very quickly and they don’t fly, so there is little chance they will get away. (be sure to keep mesh over the top of their habitat)
  • The Hissing Cockroach is easy to handle. You can hold and pet them. Many owners let their sweet pet crawl on their arms and hands.

How many of you are going to run out and get a Giant Hissing Cockroach? If this seems like a bit more than you can handle, maybe you should start with something a little less intimidating. I personally like a nice Ant Farm. They are self contained and no touching is necessary. What exotic pet would you like to have? Rapid Pest Solutions wants to hear from you!

Will Cockroaches Ever Rule The World?

Will Cockroaches Ever Rule The World?

It seems that people debate this a lot. Well, maybe not this exact question….but it is often said that cockroaches would be the only thing to survive a nuclear war. They will ‘inherit the earth’, as they say. This idea may not be far off. Cockroaches have survived 350 million years, evolving the entire time and they continue to evolve and adapt today. They are developing the ability to subvert our continued efforts to get rid of them by poisoning. Cockroaches are showing an amazing ability to adapt to rapid change.

Where originally pest control technicians would go into a home and spray a liquid pesticide in the living and eating areas, they began using a bait in the late ’90’s. This bait was glucose based. At first it was thought that the roaches were developing a resistance to the poison itself. It has since been found that they actually altered their internal chemistry to not favor sweetness. The small hairs on their bodies that sense bitter and sweet began sending the message for bitterness when they came in contact with a sweet substance. Thus allowing them to avoid the glucose based bait that the pest control industry was using.

This is not to say that the human race will ever encounter MIB style cockroaches, like above, but it does say a lot about the cockroaches ability to adapt to an ever changing environment.

3 Urban Legends – Debunked!

3 Urban Legends – Debunked!

URBAN LEGEND

What is it? An Urban Legend is a secondhand story told as the truth and it is just plausible enough to be believed. Most often Urban Legends involve a horrific event that supposedly happened to a real person. Because there is a definite ‘creep’ factor in an Urban Legend, insects play well into these types of stories. Below are three urban legends that involve pests. Maybe I can convince you that these stories just can’t be true.

Spider+in+the+Oreo.jpgSpider+in+the+Oreo Spider in an Oreo

  1. THE SPIDER IN THE OREO – This is one that I have seen several times across Facebook. It serves as a warning to always take your Oreo’s apart before eating them because you never know what might be squished inside. <a href=”https://www.youtube price of tamiflu.com/watch?v=-i1oMwNgH2Q” target=”_blank”>The way that Oreo’s are made makes it highly unlikely that a spider could get caught in the center. When this legend was researched by David Emery, an urban legend expert, he was told by the original poster that they actually smashed the spider into the cream center themselves. Not such a scary story when you hear that!
  2. ROACH EGGS ON AN ENVELOPE – I have heard this story for years. A woman is licking envelopes and gets a paper cut on her tongue. She thinks nothing of it but soon a lump appears. She goes to the doctor to have it looked at. When the doctor begins to lance the sore a cockroach comes out. The idea is that there were cockroach eggs in the glue on the envelope and when she got the paper cut the eggs made there way into the wound on the tongue and continued to grow. OK, the problem with this story is that a pregnant cockroach carries all of its eggs in a hard casing. The individual eggs are delicate and could not withstand being removed from the casing and scattered around the flap of an envelope. Although this makes for a creepy story you don’t have to worry about baby cockroaches flooding from your mouth.
  3. MOUSE URINE ON SODA CANS – The story is that you can get sick and die from rodent urine  that is on the lip of pop cans. It is said that because cases upon cases of pop are stored in large warehouses where rodents can run wild,  the cans are dirty.  Although rats and mice can carry diseases that are harmful to humans, drinking from these cans is unlikely to  cause death. If you are still a little freaked out by this you can wipe down or rinse the top of your can before consuming.

Don’t let Urban Legends scare you too much. Most of them have only the tiniest bit of truth and a great deal of embellishment. If you find yourself in a situation with some creepy crawlies don’t stress. Give Rapid Pest Solutions a call. We have the answers you need.
