Who Scares You More?

Who Scares You More?

October begins my favorite time of year. The crisp weather, beautiful colors, and scent of fall bring a smile to my face. And of course, there is Halloween – my very favorite holiday! Lots of bugs and other creepy crawlies are associated with Halloween and part of the fun of Halloween is the scary movies that you watch, curled up in the dark. Let’s bring these two things together in what I like to call

“Who Scares You More?”

Hannibal Lecter – vs – Spiders

On the surface, you may think Hannibal Lecter wins scariest of these two hands down. But hold on, let’s take a closer look. Sure Hannibal is intimidating and smart, and he wants to eat you. So, yeah, those are pretty scary qualities, but spiders are really intimidating, too, especially big ones. They may not want to eat you but they can definitely bite you. Spiders also have that sticky web that you can never get off of you if you happen to walk into one. Hannibal will literally bite a piece of your face right off.

Hannibal wins scariest on this one.

Shark from Jaws – vs – Rats

Here we have a horror villain that you will only encounter in the ocean.  Rats can be found in every major city in the U.S. Your odds of encountering a rat are much greater than a shark. Although there are stories of rats nibbling on live people as they slept, I don’t find that to be a big concern of mine. In the ocean though, sharks are a concern. And if one attacks you it won’t be just a nibble.

The shark is scarier.

Jigsaw -vs- Roaches

Jigsaw forces his victims to play games in order to escape harm. The games are both mentally and physically challenging. Roaches can invade your space, only coming out in the dark, hiding in cracks and corners; that right there sounds like a horror villain. I think that it is possible to solve one of Jigsaw’s puzzle and make your escape. There is no escape from creepy roaches that come out while you’re sleeping and contaminate every single thing they come in contact with.

Roaches are much scarier!

Cujo -vs – Bats

Well, this one is a dilemma, isn’t it? Cujo is a sweet, cuddly St. Bernard who gets bitten by a bat.  The dog contracts rabies and it turns him into a murderous beast. Now, most people would say that a large dog that can maul and kill you is scarier than anything, but the fact that the bat is the one that gave the dog rabies makes me feel that he is much scarier.

Bats are scarier. (at least rabid ones are)

Well, it seems that there is a tie, 2 – 2.

What are your opinions on who is scarier? What would your tiebreaker be?

If you find yourself up against any of these pests give Rapid a call, we can help. Unfortunately, we can’t do anything about the horror monsters.

Have A Spook-Tacular Halloween!

Have A Spook-Tacular Halloween!

Here at Rapid Pest Solutions, we love Halloween and it’s only two weeks away! What better way for us to celebrate than to list some of the best scary movies that involve BUGS!

Here are our picks for the Top 5 Scary Movies Involving Bugs.

Let the countdown begin!

  • 5. Them! (1954) – The movie Them! uses the premise of atomic bomb testing as having caused ants to mutate into giants that eat humans. These giant ants live under the city and come out to capture children. This movie is from the 50’s so it might seem a little underwhelming by today’s standard but it is still a classic of that time.
  • 4. Arachnophobia (1990) – While not super scary perse this movie does feature the gross factor as well as the jump scare. When a South American spider makes its way to the U.S. and mates with our domestic spiders a deadly crossbreed is created. John Goodman as the exterminator is worth the watch.
  • 3. The Swarm (1978) – In the 80’s you probably heard about the ‘African Killer Bees’ that were headed toward the United States. I know that as a grade schooler I was terrified of them killing me and my family. This movie surely fed into that fear as it depicts the killer bees forming swarms that kill thousands of people in numerous cities.
  • 2. Bug (2006) – This movie is full of suspense and will truly make your skin crawl. Finding bugs in the bed is only the beginning, the rest is a nightmare!
  • 1. The Fly (1986) – I consider this a horror classic. If you haven’t seen it, you need to. A scientist that accidentally combines himself genetically with a fly seemed really far fetched when this movie came out. The way technology is developing this might be something more likely than we imagined.

There you have Rapid Pest Solutions picks of the top five scary movies involving bugs. There is still plenty of time to watch these movies leading up to Halloween. Maybe you want a little treat while you watch? Here are some snacks that will fit the occasion.

Arachnophobia – It’s Not Just A Movie

Arachnophobia – It’s Not Just A Movie

Arachnophobia – the fear of spiders.

An estimated 9 million American adults have a fear of spiders. I know I do! Of all the bugs and insects out there, spiders scare me the most by far. Just looking at a picture of a spider causes my anxiety to kick in. (writing this blog is causing some major spider related stress!) Strangely enough, even some entomologists fear spiders. American Entomologist published a paper in which they surveyed 41 entomologists that willingly admitted to having some aversion to spiders. One participant was quoted as saying “I would rather pick up a handful of maggots than have to get close enough to a spider to kill it.” Some people said their quick, jerky movements were the reason that spiders freaked them out. That may be part of it but for me it’s those eyes. UGH!

You can read the full article here.

Spider+Eyes.jpgSpider+Eyes

Believe it or not there are some positive things about spiders, I promise! Below are some of the ways that spiders can actually help indoors.

  • Spiders eat pests. They feed on earwigs, mosquitoes, flies and more. If left to their own devices in your home, they will actually provide pest control for you.
  • Spiders kill other spiders. When spiders encounter one another it usually results in a fight with the winner eating the loser. You may see a shift from several smaller spiders to fewer larger ones. While that may not seem like a positive, the larger cellar spiders are known to kill black widows. That makes them a friend in my book.
  • Spiders help stop the spread of disease. Spiders eat the other pests that can transmit disease to humans. These include mosquitoes, roaches and flies.

Cellar+Spider.jpgCellar+Spider

Even though I have listed some positive things that spiders can do most of us still want to keep them out of our homes. Here are some things you can do to control spiders.

  • Caulk and block points of entry. This will stop spiders as well as their food sources from entering in the first place.
  • Keep debris, plants and mulch from touching your homes structure.
  • Store things in plastic tubs with tight lids. Cardboard boxes attract pests which in turn attract spiders.
  • Store firewood outdoors and away from the home.
  • Use a residual insecticide around the perimeter of your home and around doors and windows.

If you are having a problem with spiders Rapid Pest Solutions can help. And remember, no matter what, be thankful that we don’t have to deal with the Camel Spider! YIKES!

Happy Hauntings

Happy Hauntings

October is my very favorite month and with that comes Halloween! To me October is apple cider, carving pumpkins, kids dressed up as their favorite characters, scary movies and the beautiful colors of the changing leaves. It seems the stores want to rush us right along to the Christmas season but please, let me enjoy October!

Spiders scare me like no other. This house is hard for me to look at. Even though I know that there is nothing real about it.

Vampire+Bat.jpgVampire+Bat Vampire Bat

I absolutely LOVE bats! I think they’re cute and they eat lots of mosquitoes in the summer months. Maybe the reason they are associated with Halloween is because of the Vampire Bat. Yes, there is such a thing.

I’m not sure – but isn’t the original idea of ‘Trick-or-Treating’ that the person gives you a treat or you will play a trick on them? What if the treat was the trick? How would things go over if the treats you were  passing out were actually chocolate covered bugs?!

Bug+Candy.jpgBug+Candy Chocolate covered scorpions, ants and crickets.

As if the things above aren’t scary enough, let’s not forget the Vampire Spider.

As I mentioned earlier, not everything about October is scary and related to Halloween. There are also the beautiful fall colors and traditions.

5 Things Only Exterminators Understand

5 Things Only Exterminators Understand

There are some things that we just know. Our weather is unpredictable, puppies are cute and you don’t put ketchup on a Chicago style dog. There are probably some things that only you understand based on your profession. The pest control industry is no different. Here are some things only exterminators will understand.

1. Eating In A Restaurant Will Never Be The Same – Those in the pest control industry are on high alert when dining out. Our eyes will be searching the corners for rodent stations and we will be paying attention to the smell. In case you didn’t know, cockroaches have a very distinct smell. A small prayer of thanks goes out when my favorite restaurant passes my quick inspection! However, I would rather eat at place that has pest control than not. Everything should be under control if they have regular service.

Searching.gifSearching

2. Free Advice – Friends and Family expect to get advice and treatments for free. Ants over running the kitchen? Mice nesting in your drawers? Termites eating your home? No, there is no magic trick we can do to get rid of your pests. It will require a regular treatment. And those treatments cost money!

Make+It+Rain.gifMake+It+Rain

3. I Only Have One Mouse –  Ummm, yeah, sure. While I suppose it is possible to have only one mouse it is definitely not the norm. Usually by the time you see one mouse you have dozens. Don’t be fooled.

4. Every Issue Is A National Emergency – Every customer wants their appointment yesterday. While I understand that having ants or other bugs isn’t ideal, it really isn’t going to make much difference if we come later today, tomorrow or in 4 days. On the other hand, don’t wait for a minor nuisance to become a full blown infestation and then be upset when you have to wait a few days for an appointment. You’ve waited this long without calling, a couple more days won’t matter.

Help+Me.gifHelp+Me

5. No Chemical – Many customers want to be Green, either for the sake of the environment, their families health or other reasons. The problem is you can’t kill pests that way. Peppermint oil, lemon juice, dryer sheets and other homemade remedies don’t work. We don’t have to use an abundance of chemical, your house will not be glowing neon green after your treatment. Keep in mind, a certain amount of pesticide is needed to get the results you desire. That’s all there is to it.

Duh.gifDuh

Think of it this way – Your home is a castle, and pest control is the moat around it.

The purpose of the moat was to protect the castle from invaders. Having an exterior perimeter pest control treatment is the same thing. It protects you, your family and your home from unwanted pests. Pest Control is well worth the time and money that it takes. If you would like to protect your castle contact Rapid Pest Solutions. We will provide the protective barrier to keep pests out.

Thoughts That Will Keep You Up At Night

Thoughts That Will Keep You Up At Night

At night we lay down in our comfy beds and snuggle down under the blankets. Dreams enter and entertain us like mini movies in our minds. This is a time of peace and rest after a day in a hectic world. But wait…what was that? A small scuffle in the closet? Did I feel something on my arm? Here are some thoughts that just may keep you up at night.

Tiny+Vampire.jpgTiny+Vampire Tiny Vampire

BED BUGS – Ooooohhhhhh! That’s right, I jumped right in with the worst one! Although bed bugs are not known to spread disease and are not related to sanitation, what makes them so creepy is that you are their food source. They use your blood as a meal, like tiny little vampires. Now some people may say, ‘So? Mosquitoes do the same thing.’  –  True, but mosquitoes don’t stalk you in the dead of night in the one place that you should feel ultimate comfort and safety. Maybe it’s just me but thinking that bed bugs could be quietly living in my mattress, closet or bedside table is enough to give me nightmares. Literally – I have had nightmares involving bed bugs.

Spider+Ride.pngSpider+Ride Scariest RIde Ever!

SPIDERS – If you know me or read my blog you certainly know that I have some major arachnophobia. The fact that I let a spider live quietly in the corner of my bathroom ceiling was shocking. But I figured if I could see him and he stayed far away I would leave him be. The problem now is that he is gone. Just overnight, poof, vanished. This does not make me a happy camper. Combine that with the fact that a spider came running at me as I was sitting on the couch and you can imagine the terror! At night when it’s quiet and I’m laying in the darkness of the bedroom, I think about those spiders that got away. Where are they now? Do they seek revenge? Is one of them lowering down  from the ceiling directly above my face right now?! Ugh! No sleep tonight.

Cute+Mouse.gifCute+Mouse Cute Mouse

MICE – Personally I do not fear mice. I think that they are super cute and I feel bad when they get caught. That being said, I also know that you cannot have them in your home. They cause damage and are very unsanitary. Have you ever been laying quietly in your bed and heard a soft scratching somewhere? A little rustle in the closest maybe? If you have a mouse in your house that is exactly what might happen. Even though you know it is nothing big and it is not an intruder – at least not a human one – it can make your heart race and fill you with a feeling of fear. So as you drift off into dreamland don’t pay attention to those small noises.

I guess there are lots of things that can keep you up at night. Scary movies, your neighbors loud music, that work project due at the end of the week. Maybe the problem is that we let negative things into our mind. Perhaps if we thought pleasant thoughts when we laid in bed we would fall asleep faster and have a more restful night. I will leave you with some cute and positive things to think about tonight as you wait for the sandman.

Why Spiders Are Scarier Than Freddy Krueger

Why Spiders Are Scarier Than Freddy Krueger

I love horror movies and the scarier the better. I will read ghost stories at night when I am home alone. There is something about that little thrill that you get that I actually like. One thing I don’t like – Spiders! Anyone that knows me is aware that seeing a spider can actually bring me to tears. Spiders are terrifying and that led me to write this blog – Why Spiders Are Scarier Than Freddy Krueger.

(and trust me, they are)

Spider+&+Freddy+Krueger.jpgSpider+&+Freddy+Krueger Seriously. That spider is way scarier!

FREDDYFreddy Krueger haunts your dreams. If you fall asleep you become vulnerable to him. Unless you choose to pull him into the real world he is left behind when you wake up.

SPIDER – Spiders are not a nightmare at all, they are very much part of our waking lives. 24/7/365

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

FREDDY – Armed with a glove of razor sharp knives you may think Freddy is scary than a spider. But think of it this way, you can see that big glove coming! That makes it easier to get out of the way.

SPIDERSpiders fight with venom. There is a chance that you won’t even know you are in danger. Suddenly you notice a red lump on your arm or leg…the venom has already been injected!

FREDDY – Let’s face it, Freddy can’t hide just anywhere. I mean, he’s human size. This limits him on where he can go. Most likely in a closet or under a bed – and isn’t that the first place we would look for a boogie man?

Spider+Meme.jpgSpider+Meme

SPIDER – These little devils are small! They can hide anywhere. Tucked into the corner of a room, behind your headboard, in the shower. (eek!) There are so many places that a spider could hide we could never check them all.

FREDDY – Freddy preys mainly on children. Now I’m not saying that’s a good thing, but as an adult you really don’t have much to worry about. I’m just throwing that out there.

SPIDER – A spider doesn’t care how old you are. They don’t care if you’re male or female, how much money you make or what your hobbies are. They are an equal opportunity frightener. Scurrying out from dark closets or dropping down from the ceiling, right in front of your face, they will get a scream every time.

I think I have made my point. If you find your home has spiders or any other scary pest, give Rapid a call. We have a treatment to fit your needs.

5 Things Lady Gaga Has In Common With Bugs

5 Things Lady Gaga Has In Common With Bugs

You might be thinking ‘What? That’s crazy!’ But it’s true. I have created a list of five things that the very talented Lady Gaga has in common with the bugs that Rapid Pest Solutions fights.

Music+Notes.jpgMusic+Notes

  • BEAUTIFUL MUSIC – Lady Gaga has been making chart topping music for years. I’m sure that you are familiar with at least a few of her songs. Some insects also make wonderful music. Cicadas and crickets make a gentle night music. Bugs also make music when they fly by producing unique wing beat frequencies. The houseflies wing beat is in the key of F.

Lady+Gaga+Meat+Dress.jpgLady+Gaga+Meat+Dress

  • MEAT DRESS – Surely you must have heard about the infamous Meat Dress that Lady Gaga wore to the 2010 VMA’s. Her dress, hat and shoes were made entirely out of raw meat. I would think that in order to wear raw meat for several hours as clothing means you must like beef. Well, some bugs like beef too. Raw beef, just like the dress. When yellow jackets are foraging they are attracted to raw meat and of course the blowfly likes raw meat too.

Baby+I+Was+Born+This+Way.jpgBaby+I+Was+Born+This+Way

  • BORN THIS WAY – The Lady Gaga song ‘Born This Way’ speaks of self-acceptance. The idea being that there are no mistakes in the way you are made – you were born this way! Even though most of us don’t like bugs and consider them quite the nuisance they were just born this way. Insects can no more help their predisposed nature than us humans can.

  • AMERICAN HORROR STORY – Lady Gaga has confirmed that she will be joining the fifth season of American Horror Story. I love this show and I can’t wait to see what type of character she plays. I also consider insects to be part of my very own American Horror Story. Especially spiders, or as I like to call them, miniature nightmares. They are terrible!

Spider.gifSpider

  • ALEIODES GAGA – What is that you ask? Well, in 2012 Lady Gaga received the honor (?) of having a newly discovered parasitic wasp named after her. The Aleiodes Gaga was named by researchers at the University of Thailand. You can’t get more in common with a bug than that!

Gaga+Wasp.jpgGaga+Wasp

Is there another singer, actor or entertainer that you think has a lot in common with pests? We would love to hear your thoughts. If you find that you have an insect problem in your home or business contact Rapid Pest Solutions. We have the answer you need!

3 Urban Legends – Debunked!

3 Urban Legends – Debunked!

URBAN LEGEND

What is it? An Urban Legend is a secondhand story told as the truth and it is just plausible enough to be believed. Most often Urban Legends involve a horrific event that supposedly happened to a real person. Because there is a definite ‘creep’ factor in an Urban Legend, insects play well into these types of stories. Below are three urban legends that involve pests. Maybe I can convince you that these stories just can’t be true.

Spider+in+the+Oreo.jpgSpider+in+the+Oreo Spider in an Oreo

  1. THE SPIDER IN THE OREO – This is one that I have seen several times across Facebook. It serves as a warning to always take your Oreo’s apart before eating them because you never know what might be squished inside. <a href=”https://www.youtube price of tamiflu.com/watch?v=-i1oMwNgH2Q” target=”_blank”>The way that Oreo’s are made makes it highly unlikely that a spider could get caught in the center. When this legend was researched by David Emery, an urban legend expert, he was told by the original poster that they actually smashed the spider into the cream center themselves. Not such a scary story when you hear that!
  2. ROACH EGGS ON AN ENVELOPE – I have heard this story for years. A woman is licking envelopes and gets a paper cut on her tongue. She thinks nothing of it but soon a lump appears. She goes to the doctor to have it looked at. When the doctor begins to lance the sore a cockroach comes out. The idea is that there were cockroach eggs in the glue on the envelope and when she got the paper cut the eggs made there way into the wound on the tongue and continued to grow. OK, the problem with this story is that a pregnant cockroach carries all of its eggs in a hard casing. The individual eggs are delicate and could not withstand being removed from the casing and scattered around the flap of an envelope. Although this makes for a creepy story you don’t have to worry about baby cockroaches flooding from your mouth.
  3. MOUSE URINE ON SODA CANS – The story is that you can get sick and die from rodent urine  that is on the lip of pop cans. It is said that because cases upon cases of pop are stored in large warehouses where rodents can run wild,  the cans are dirty.  Although rats and mice can carry diseases that are harmful to humans, drinking from these cans is unlikely to  cause death. If you are still a little freaked out by this you can wipe down or rinse the top of your can before consuming.

Roach+Egg+Casing+and+Babies.jpgRoach+Egg+Casing+and+Babies Cockroach egg casing and babies after they hatched.

Don’t let Urban Legends scare you too much. Most of them have only the tiniest bit of truth and a great deal of embellishment. If you find yourself in a situation with some creepy crawlies don’t stress. Give Rapid Pest Solutions a call. We have the answers you need.
